2010 Brunello di Montalcino: “An Elegant Vintage”

Another rating for the 2010 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino!

Following an outstanding vintage rating from Jancis Robinson, Il Poggione received another great score for its 2010 Brunello from Walter Speller.

17.5 points - Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Just a tiny bit dusty and reductive on the nose and what looks like a hint of oak. Succulent fresh fruit with a proper bite of tannins on the finish. Seductive and juicy and already hard to resist.

Robinson's 2010 vintage rating was also enthusiastic:

The 2010s are considered highly… a more classic and altogether more elegant vintage, determined by a cool and wet spring that continued into a protracted and rather cool summer. It forced many producers to harvest as late as possible to ensure that properly ripe grapes would end up in the fermentation tanks. But while other Italian wine regions struggled to achieve ripeness, Montalcino was blessed with more sunshine than others. Harvest started in mid September, and, in some cases, continued well into the third week of October. The long cool ripening season has resulted in fresh, elegant wines with a muscular structure.
